Marlon Boarnet is a nationally recognized authority on issues at the intersection of economics, land use, and urban planning. His data-driven studies of land use — travel behavior interactions, urban growth patterns, infrastructure investment, and economic development have helped shape research and policy on those topics. Boarnet co-edits the Journal of Regional Science, a leading journal in the fields of urban economics and quantitative geography. He is an associate editor of the Journal of the American Planning Association and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Planning Literature, Journal of Transport and Land Use, and, from 1999 through 2010, Papers in Regional Science.

The Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine at UC Irvine is successfully advancing patient care through education, evidence based research and clinical practice applying integrative medical therapies. The Center is rapidly becoming recognized for providing “new knowledge” bridging complementary and conventional treatments — all for the singular purpose of achieving better health.

Medical professionals at the Samueli Center of Integrative Medicine at UC Irvine provide budding medical students with a wealth of education regarding alternative and homeopathic medicine. Research at the center focuses on practices such as yoga, acupuncture, and massage therapy, which are in dire need of further research.

Doctoral student Andrew Chang discusses how research, particularly that within California’s public universities, has impacted–and will continue to impact–economic productivity.

Andrew C. Chang is a third year doctoral student in the Department of Economics. Andrew earned his Bachelor of Science degrees in Economics and Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington in 2006. Prior to starting at UCI in 2008, Andrew worked in research and development at the Boeing Company. He designed new communication and navigation systems for airplanes, as well as software that assists engineers in improving the quality and reducing the cost of new designs. One of the projects he contributed to, an Enhanced Vision System, allows pilots to see runways in low visibility conditions, and was certified for use on Boeing Business Jets by the Federal Aviation Administration last month. His current research investigates how businesses, such as Boeing, decide to invent new technology.

Sales Consultant Jon Baskin tells his human story about what it is like to be a sales consultant in Newport Beach at Fletcher Jones Motorcars.

Behavioral psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Cauffman explores the factors that drive adolescents to commit serious crimes. In addition, she explains the importance of helping these juvenile offenders to stop their crimes, rather than simply incarcerating them. The highly controversial topic of the death penalty for these offenders is also touched upon.

She also discusses her research on juvenile offenders and adolescent development, specifically the program “Crossroads: Formal vs. Informal Processing of Juvenile Offenders.”

Christopher holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of Idaho where he was recognized as both a Jeppeson and L.H. Gipson Scholar. Christopher’s work focuses on using mild sensory stimulation to protect the brain from stroke — the third leading cause of death and the primary cause of long-term disability in the United States. His research is the first of its kind to demonstrate that a non-pharmacological, mild sensory stimulus-based treatment may completely protect the brain from stroke damage, and if proven applicable to humans, could radically change the way stroke victims are treated. Christopher is advised by Dr. Ron Frostig, has garnered a fellowship from the American Heart Association, and received awards from the Institute of Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, and from the Society for Neuroscience
